Simply not using the API does not guarantee zero charges if active API keys exist in third-party applications.

1. Canceling via OpenAI Platform Website

The primary and most reliable method to cancel your ChatGPT API subscription and stop billing through the OpenAI Platform:

  1. Visit platform.openai.com on your browser and sign in with your OpenAI account
  2. Click your Organization Name or Profile Icon in the top-left corner
  3. Select Settings from the sidebar
  4. Click on Billing in the left navigation menu
  5. Under the Payment Methods section, click Manage
  6. Remove your saved credit card or payment method by clicking the Delete or Remove option next to it
  7. Confirm the removal when prompted to prevent any future charges

Note: Removing your payment method from the OpenAI Platform will prevent any future API charges. However, any outstanding usage charges incurred before removal will still be billed on your next invoice date. Always check your current usage and outstanding balance before removing the payment method.

2. Canceling Auto-Recharge / Prepaid Credits

If you have set up automatic credit top-ups or prepaid credit auto-recharge on your OpenAI API account, cancel them separately to avoid recurring charges:

4. Setting a Monthly Usage Spending Limit

If you want to limit API charges without fully canceling, set a hard spending limit to cap your monthly API costs at zero or a desired amount:

  1. Visit platform.openai.com and sign in to your account
  2. Go to Settings → Billing → Usage Limits
  3. Set your Hard Limit to $0 or your desired maximum monthly spend

Note: Setting a Hard Limit of $0 effectively stops all API usage once any existing prepaid credits are exhausted. This is a safer alternative to removing your payment method if you want to retain your OpenAI account for potential future use without incurring charges.

5. Canceling ChatGPT Plus Subscription (Separate from API)

If you also have a ChatGPT Plus consumer subscription (separate from the API), cancel it independently through the ChatGPT website:

6. Canceling ChatGPT Plus via Google Play Store (Android)

If your ChatGPT Plus subscription was originally purchased through Google Play Store on Android:
