How to Cancel Microsoft Azure Subscription | माइक्रोसॉफ्ट Azure सब्सक्रिप्शन कैसे रद्द करें

Microsoft Azure is a leading cloud computing platform offering a vast range of services including virtual machines, databases, AI tools, and storage solutions. If you no longer need your Azure subscription, you can cancel it at any time through the Azure Portal. This comprehensive guide covers all methods to cancel your Azure subscription — whether you are on a Pay-As-You-Go plan, a free trial, an Enterprise Agreement, or a CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) subscription.

Key Information: Canceling an Azure subscription immediately disables all running services and resources. Your data is retained for 90 days after cancellation, after which it is permanently deleted. Make sure to export or migrate all critical data before proceeding with cancellation.

1. Canceling via Azure Portal (Primary Method)

For Pay-As-You-Go and direct Microsoft subscriptions:

  1. Visit portal.azure.com and sign in with your Microsoft account
  2. In the search bar at the top, type Subscriptions and select it from the results
  3. Click on the subscription you want to cancel from the list
  4. In the left-hand menu, scroll down and click Cancel Subscription
  5. A confirmation panel will appear on the right — review the impact of cancellation carefully
  6. Check the box confirming you understand the cancellation consequences
  7. Click Cancel Subscription to finalize

Note: Only the Account Administrator or a user with the Owner role on the subscription has permission to cancel it. If the Cancel Subscription option is grayed out, you may not have sufficient permissions — contact your Azure account owner.

2. Canceling via Microsoft Azure Cost Management

An alternative path to cancel through the Cost Management section:

  1. Sign in to portal.azure.com
  2. Navigate to Cost Management + Billing from the left sidebar or search bar
  3. Click on Billing Accounts → select your billing account
  4. Go to Billing ProfilesInvoice Sections → find your subscription
  5. Click on the subscription and select Cancel Subscription
  6. Confirm by following the on-screen prompts

3. Canceling Azure Free Trial Subscription

If you are on the Azure Free Trial (₹13,300 free credits for 30 days) and wish to cancel before being charged:

  1. Sign in to portal.azure.com
  2. Go to Subscriptions from the search bar
  3. Select your Free Trial subscription
  4. Click Cancel Subscription from the left menu
  5. Confirm cancellation — no charges will apply if credits are unused or the 30-day period has not ended

Note: If your free trial has automatically converted to a Pay-As-You-Go plan, you must cancel it separately through the Azure Portal to stop future billing.

4. Canceling Enterprise Agreement (EA) Subscription

If your organization subscribed to Azure through an Enterprise Agreement:

  1. Sign in to the Azure Enterprise Portal (ea.azure.com) as an Enterprise Administrator
  2. Navigate to ManageEnrollment
  3. Select the subscription or enrollment you want to cancel
  4. Click Edit Enrollment and set the status to Disabled
  5. Contact your Microsoft Account Representative to formally terminate the Enterprise Agreement

Critical: Enterprise Agreement cancellations are governed by the contract terms signed with Microsoft. Early termination may result in penalties or remaining commitment fees. Always review your EA contract and consult your Microsoft account manager before canceling.

5. Canceling CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) Subscription

If your Azure subscription was purchased through a Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider or reseller:

  1. Contact your CSP partner or reseller directly — you cannot cancel a CSP subscription through the Azure Portal
  2. Request cancellation in writing and ask for a confirmation reference number
  3. Your CSP partner will initiate the cancellation through the Microsoft Partner Center
  4. Verify the cancellation status in your Azure Portal after your partner confirms

Critical: CSP subscriptions must be canceled within the first 72 hours to qualify for a full refund under Microsoft's cancellation policy. After 72 hours, the subscription may remain active for the rest of the billing cycle with no refund. Always check your CSP partner's refund terms.

6. Exporting and Migrating Data Before Cancellation

Azure retains data for 90 days after cancellation — but it is strongly recommended to back up all data beforehand:

  1. Export Azure Blob Storage data using Azure Storage Explorer or AzCopy tool
  2. Take snapshots or backups of all Virtual Machines (VMs) before deletion
  3. Export Azure SQL Databases as BACPAC files via the Azure Portal
  4. Download or migrate data from Azure Cosmos DB, Table Storage, and File Shares
  5. Export Azure Active Directory user and group data if applicable
  6. Save all ARM Templates and infrastructure configurations for future use

Note: Once the 90-day retention period ends, all resources and data associated with your canceled Azure subscription are permanently and irreversibly deleted by Microsoft.

7. Canceling Bank-Linked Autopay or UPI Mandate

If Azure charges continue even after canceling your subscription:

  1. Log in to your bank's internet banking portal or mobile app
  2. Navigate to Standing Instructions or Auto-Debit Mandates
  3. Search for and locate the Microsoft or Azure payment mandate
  4. Cancel or revoke the mandate immediately
  5. Contact your bank's customer support if the mandate cannot be removed online

Important Notes

  • Immediate Effect: Cancellation takes effect immediately — all running VMs, databases, apps, and services are stopped and disabled right away
  • Data Retention: Azure retains your data and resources for 90 days after cancellation before permanently deleting them
  • Reactivation: You can reactivate your subscription within the 90-day window by visiting the Azure Portal and selecting Reactivate
  • Outstanding Charges: Any charges incurred before cancellation will still appear on your next invoice and must be paid
  • Refunds: Azure Pay-As-You-Go subscriptions are billed for actual usage — refunds are typically not issued for usage already consumed
  • India Pricing: Azure pricing varies by service — Pay-As-You-Go rates are billed in INR and depend on resource consumption (VMs start from approximately ₹700/month)
  • Multiple Subscriptions: Canceling one subscription does not affect other Azure subscriptions under the same account

Troubleshooting

If Cancel Subscription Option is Grayed Out or Missing:

  • Confirm you are signed in as the Account Administrator or have the Owner role on the subscription
  • Check if the subscription is an EA or CSP type — these cannot be canceled via the Azure Portal directly
  • Ensure the subscription is in an Active state — disabled or expired subscriptions may not show the cancel option
  • Try accessing the portal in a private/incognito browser window or a different browser

If Charges Continue After Cancellation:

  • Check if you have multiple Azure subscriptions — only the specific subscription you canceled is affected
  • Verify cancellation status under Cost Management + Billing → Subscriptions
  • Look for active auto-debit mandates in your bank or UPI app and cancel them
  • Contact Microsoft Azure Billing Support with your cancellation confirmation and raise a dispute

If You Want to Reactivate After Cancellation:

  • Sign in to portal.azure.com
  • Go to Subscriptions and find your canceled subscription
  • Click Reactivate — this is only possible within the 90-day data retention window
  • After 90 days, reactivation is not possible and all data will have been permanently deleted

Contacting Microsoft Azure Support

  • Azure Support Portal: portal.azure.com → Help + Support
  • Microsoft Support Website: support.microsoft.com
  • Azure Billing Support: Available 24/7 via the Azure Portal — go to Help + Support → New Support Request → Billing
  • Phone Support (India): 1800-102-1100 (toll-free for Microsoft India)
  • Twitter/X: @AzureSupport

Alternatives to Canceling

  • Delete Unused Resources: Stop and delete individual VMs, databases, or storage accounts to reduce costs without canceling the entire subscription
  • Set Budget Alerts: Use Cost Management → Budgets to set spending limits and receive alerts before costs exceed your threshold
  • Switch to Reserved Instances: If you plan to continue using Azure, Reserved VM Instances can save up to 72% compared to Pay-As-You-Go pricing
  • Downgrade Services: Move to lower-tier VM sizes, storage tiers, or database configurations to significantly cut monthly costs
  • Use Azure Hybrid Benefit: If you have existing Windows Server or SQL Server licenses, apply Azure Hybrid Benefit to reduce costs
  • Suspend Non-Critical Resources: Deallocate VMs and pause non-essential services during off-hours to minimize usage-based billing

Before canceling your Azure subscription, consider deleting individual unused resources or setting up budget alerts via Cost Management to control spending. Full cancellation immediately disables all services and starts the 90-day countdown to permanent data deletion.
